new Brick siding color does not match old brick color
I am in the process of building a house. The first phase of the brick siding was laid about two weeks ago. Now, when the contractor laid the 2nd phase of bricks about two days ago I noticed that the brick color does not match for the 2 phases (a slight discoloration). They are supposed to be the same color. I am talking about the actual brick - not the mortor. Before I make a big deal to the builder, is this a common issue when bricks are not layed on the same day? What can be done to make them the same? The builder suggests that when they are complete with the bricking phase they will pressure wash the brick. This will make colors match. Is this true?
vitaylor731,
First, sorry for the delay, I missed your post and just saw it today!
This is somewhat of a difficult call, after all, it is your home. Variations in brick are usually pretty normal, but normally you wouldn't notice it just from course to course, unless there was a change in humidity or moisture.
Gil at Wayne Builder's Supply informed me that a change in moisture can definately affect the color. The brick already laid on the house, for example, will take in the moisture much more quickly than those that are still stacked, and thus appear darker.
Also, the process of pressure washing the brick afterwards is perfectly normal. Acid used to be used, but according to Gil, an acid-based detergent is actually used more commonly now and is easier on the brick and mortar.
If you've had pretty consitent weather for a few days (watch the humidity) you'll be able to tell if it's just a moisture issue. Also, usually a batch number is provided on pallets. It's important that all the brick come from the same batch to insure uniformity.
Hope that helps!
